Animation Around Europe: Portuguese Animation Award Students

The Portuguese Animation Award has been promoted since 2013 by Animation House – a cultural non-profit association based in Porto. This award exists to celebrate and reward the Portuguese animated cinema and its authors. This selection, diverse and of great quality, presents with films that range from stop-motion to 2D and 3D and show the best that was made and produced in Portugal in 2023. The programme includes films that portray fantasy and the dreamlike, that deal with reality and what it’s like to live in a gentrified city, that talk about food, that talk about solitude, that talk about seagulls being adopted by families. There’s no shortage of themes and the used techniques also reflect that range. The film that won the 2023 competition was “De Imperio”, by Alessandro Novelli. The film that won the 2023 students’ competition was “My Seagull Espanhola”, by Bárbara Barreto, Catarina Santos and Raquel Salvado from Lusófona University of Lisbon.
