The newly founded GDR had made it its mission to be the better Germany. This also meant that it wanted to promote a new image of women that was fundamentally different from the West German model. Equality between men and women was political will and should be lived – even in the microcosm of the DEFA studio for animated films, which existed in Dresden between 1955 and 1990.
Against the backdrop of a rigid state-run studio system, women created films of extraordinary beauty and expressiveness and prove once again that animation is not just made for children. At the same time, they also struggled for opportunities for advancement and the compatibility of family and career.
