JOHNNY & ME – EINE ZEITREISE MIT JOHN HEARTFIELD
In cooperation with SchulKinoWoche Baden-Württemberg:
The German painter, graphic artist, photomontage artist and stage designer, John Heartfield, was one of Europe’s most important artists according to Bertold Brecht. For the Nazis, the inventor of political photomontage soon became one of the most dangerous enemies of the state. He spent years on the run in Europe, and later failed to find a safe home even in socialist East Germany. Plagued by a creativity crisis and self-doubt, graphic artist Stephanie becomes fascinated by John Heartfield’s work. A time tunnel transposes her to a studio where the artist, now a cartoon character, takes her on a journey through his eventful life.
After the film screening, director Katrin Rothe will talk about her personal connection with John Heartfield, how she brought him to life on film and why his art and commitment are still relevant today.

József Gémes, Hungary 1984
79 Min.
The tragic medieval tale of a man of inhuman strength, fierce temper and a desire for noble knighthood. While on the run as a murderer, he finds new life as a knight, only to face disillusionment, the horrors of war and ugly human vices. It is an adaptation of the Toldi trilogy, a 19th-century epic poem in three parts by János Arany. The film was produced through Pannonia Film Studio and is notable for its visual style, which resembles oil painting. It won the feature film award at the 1985 Annecy International Animated Film Festival.

The Fall of the Berlin Wall – Stories from the GDR
6 shortfilms | 72 min | no age restrictions | OV with english subtitles
In 1989 the fall of the Berlin Wall initiated the end of the DDR. With six animated films which some of are based on true stories, we want to remind everyone about the most important day of German history.
The films tell stories about life in the GDR, which was different from life in West-Germany in many ways. They show the need of the people for personal and political freedom and the repressions which destroyed or killed especially young people. The films also tell stories about the beautiful as well as the absurd moments. Join us on our timetravel to a land which no more exists.
