Over the Year
Before and after the festival
The ITFS lasts six days, but we also bring the world of animation to you throughout the year – in Stuttgart, the Länd and worldwide. With regular Animation Specials and the Animation Lounge for professionals from Stuttgart and the surrounding area as well as three curated programmes in the ITFS Animation Tour:
What's behind the Animation Special?
We regularly offer Animation Specials especially for animation fans in the Stuttgart region: Best-of programmes, specially curated films for the German National Holiday or Short Film Day. Always up-to-date and in co-operation with other cultural institutions. We publish current dates in our News section.
Why is the Animation Lounge an industry event?
An Animation Lounge is organised around four times a year for professionals from Stuttgart and its region: Together with MFG Filmförderung and the Animation Media Creators Region Stuttgart (AMCRS), we invite you to the Pre Fixe with Animation Lounge as a pre-programme to the MFG Jour Fixe. Animation professionals will give an insight into current projects, techniques and finished films. Afterwards, the film industry from the Ländle meets at the monthly Jour Fixe. A great opportunity for networking or to talk to film funding colleagues. Find out more on the MFG-Website.
When does the annual Animation Tour start?
In spring, the world gathers in Stuttgart for the International Festival of Animated Film. In autumn, a selection of the best festival films starts to travel around the globe for one year. Three different programmes will be on tour – from Lake Constance to Sichuan, from Tbilisi to Düsseldorf.
You would like to show one of the tour programmes?
No problem! We lend the three programmes free of charge. Period of availability: between October after the festival and September of the following year. Cinemas, cultural event organisers and other non-profit organisations that would like to show the programme as part of a public event are entitled to borrow the films.

3 Programmes, 1 Tour
Best of ITFS
The prize-winning films of the International Competition and the Student Competition as well as other must-see short films from the festival programme. The 2024 programme is a kaleidoscope of existential human needs, desires and longings. All the protagonists are in search of love and security, independence, peace and freedom, safety and meaning.
Best of Tricks for Kids
The best short films from the competition of the same name and other highlights. To ensure that all children worldwide can enjoy the programme, the films are suitable for all ages and mostly without dialogue. Life is good when you’re together. Because together with others, everything is much easier and more fun than alone. There are funny and touching stories about animals, people and clouds that are there for each other. The programme starts with EU & DU and TRIXIS ZAUBERSHOW, two films that children made themselves at ITFS 2024 in collaboration with the Baden-Württemberg State Ministry.
Trickstar Nature Award
These short films shed light on the topics of nature and the environment in a visually stunning and perceptive way and encourage critical reflection in both a humorous and serious manner. We are in the skin of birds, fish and cows, observing through their eyes how our world burns, cries, takes selfies and blows itself up. This mirror image of Homo (non-)sapiens also shows what diverse scenarios await us if we continue at this pace.
