Karmic Knot
While her impoverished family builds a secret rose empire in Soviet Latvia, Ragne struggles to find her own voice. When the USSR collapses, the beautiful flowers become the seeds of the family’s downfall.
Karmic Knot is an animated metaphor for the upheaval of geopolitical systems. As early as 2015, whilst in New York, Signe found herself recalling her personal experiences from the period before and after the collapse of the USSR. People’s tension and uncertainty are growing, without it being clear where this stems from. Today we feel it in Europe more clearly than ever before. Social norms and values are being cast aside by politicians, whilst manipulation and opportunism are rife. Thanks to its animation, Karmic Knot manages to shake up and astonish in a timeless, incisive and humorous way.
The project is animated in 2D and with original sets as backgrounds. One chapter will be directed by the German animator Ceylan Beyoglu. The project is more than 50% financed and submitted for Eurimages in March 2026, with an aimed production start late 2026.
