Master Class: Vera Neubauer

Form and Narrative

For Vera Neubauer, artistic form is an integral part of narration. Imagery, technology, and sound of a film must support the narrative in the best possible way.
As an independent filmmaker, Vera Neubauer carries out most of the artistic process on her own. She is fascinated by the simplicity of animation as a form of expression: “You just have to put one image next to another to create meaning. This realization was very profound. I felt like I had found my voice.” And yet animation remains very labor-intensive. In her work, Vera Neubauer is always looking for different media that can illustrate the story and sharpen the message. Sometimes the story comes first and the technique follows. Sometimes it’s the other way around. Whenever she discovers a visual style worth exploring, she looks for a story that best suits this newly found language.
In this master class, she talks about these approaches and how she stays motivated during the production of a film.
