Music meets Animation 

Music&Animation: Vorpremiere “Cat and Mouse” von Paul Barritt, Sat, May 6, 8 pm, Musikhalle Ludwigsburg

Theatre, animation and live music: with “Cat and Mouse”, Paul Barrit of the 1927 Theatre Company tackles this adventure in cooperation with Village Underground. The audience can look forward to a crazy animation experience at this exclusive preview event, which includes an animated cat and mouse as well as a band full of dogs. The play was inspired by George Harriman’s highly influential comic strip “Krazy Kat” (1913-1944). Renowned animation artist Paul Barritt from London is the director and creator of “Cat and Mouse”. The preview takes place on Saturday, May 6th (8 p.m.) at Musikhalle Ludwigsburg, while the official world premiere is early June in London. Paul Barritt is known for his animated stage design for the “Magic Flute” at the Komische Oper Berlin as well as his productions for the Sydney Opera House and the Salzburg Festival.

 

Musik Meets Animation at the Open Air

Opera Matinée, Sun, May 7, 11 am, Schlossplatz, Entry free

The cooperation Opera & Animation with the Stuttgart State Opera is continued this year. With a screening of Bellini’s ”The Sleepwalker” (“La Sonnambula”) on the giant LED wall and a live performance by members of the Stuttgart State Opera including singer Adam Palka, the Schlossplatz will become the venue for very special viewing and listening pleasures on Sunday, May 7th (11 a.m.). This Stuttgart opera production conducted by Gabriele Ferro and directed by  Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito was elected “Best Opera Production” of the year in 2012 in a critics’ survey by “Opernwelt” magazine.

 

On Saturday, May 6th (7:45 pm) musicians of the Ziryab-Akademie für Weltmusik initiated by the Forum der Kulturen Stuttgart perform together with Syrian-Armenian performance artist and animator Kevork Mourad. In his live performances with musicians he makes drawings which are projected onto a screen and turned into animation. At the Open Air venue, the artists will create a unique dialogue between animation and music.

 

Animated Music Videos

In addition, the 24th ITFS offers various music-related film programmes at the cinema, such as a screening of a current selection of the best animated music videos together with the jazzopen Stuttgart on Thursday, May 4th, 2017 (10 p.m.), to include British musician James Blake (“I Need A Forest Fire ft. Bon Iver“), electropop-duo Hundreds from Hamburg (“What Remains”) and well-known metal bald Korn (“A Different World”).

 

Another event on the topic of music videos is ”What’s left? The Critic of Digital Life in Hyper-Digital Music Video” curated by Prof. Dr. Holger Lund, taking place on Friday, May 5th, 2017 (10 p.m.) and dedicated to the impact of digitisation which affects all aspects of life.

 

Part of the programme is also an abstract visualisation of the Symphony No. 5 by Gustav Mahler. Video artist and experimental filmmaker Max Hattler created the animated film “Five” together with students of the School of Creative Media (City University of Hong Kong), screened on Saturday, May 6th, 2017 (11 p.m.).

 

The nightly Jam Sessions at Café le Théâtre also take place in cooperation with jazzopen. From May 4th to 6th, 2017 (from 10 p.m. every evening). live acts set the mood for a happy ending of the festival day.

Theater, Animation und Live Musik: Dieses Abenteuer wagen Paul Barritt von der 1927 Theatre Company in Zusammenarbeit mit Village Underground mit dem Stück „Cat and Mouse“. In der exklusiven Vorpremiere erwartet den Zuschauer ein verrücktes Animationserlebnis. Mit dabei sind eine animierte Katze und Maus sowie eine Band voller Hunde. Paul Barritt ist u.a. für seine animierten Bühnenbilder für die Zauberflöte an der Komischen Oper Berlin sowie Produktionen für das Sydney Opera Haus und die Salzburger Festspiele bekannt.

Musik trifft Animation auf dem Open Air:

Auch in diesem Jahr findet die Kooperation Oper & Animation in Zusammenarbeit mit der Staatsoper Stuttgart statt. Mit der Vorführung von Bellinis „Die Nachtwandlerin“ („La Sonnambula“) auf der riesigen LED Leinwand sowie einer Live Performance von Akteuren der Staatsoper Stuttgart, u.a. mit dem Sänger Adam Palka, verwandelt sich der Schlossplatz am Sonntag, 7. Mai, (11 Uhr) zu einem ganz besonderen Seh- und Hörvergnügen. 2012 wurde die Stuttgarter Produktion unter der musikalischen Leitung von Gabriele Ferro und in der Regie von Jossi Wieler und Sergio Morabito von der “Opernwelt” Kritikerumfrage zur „Aufführung des Jahres“ gewählt.

 

Auftritt Weltakademie und Animationskünstler Kevork Mourad, Samstag 6. Mai, 19:45 Uhr, Schlossplatz, Eintritt frei

Musiker der Ziryab-Akademie für Weltmusik, initiiert vom Forum der Kulturen Stuttgart, treffen am Samstag, 6. Mai (19:45 Uhr) auf den syrisch-armenischen Performancekünstler und Animator Kevork Mourad. Bei seinen Liveauftritten mit Musikern erstellt er Zeichnungen, die auf eine Leinwand projiziert werden und in Animationen übergehen. Auf dem Open Air kreieren die Künstler einen einzigartigen Dialog zwischen Animation und Musik.

 

Animated Music Videos, Donnerstag, 4. Mai, 22 Uhr

Darüber hinaus wartet das 24. ITFS auch mit unterschiedlichen musikbezogenen Filmprogrammen in den Innenstadtkinos auf: Mit dem jazzopen Stuttgart wird beispielsweise am Donnerstag, 4. Mai 2017 (22 Uhr) eine Auswahl der aktuell besten animierten Musikvideos gezeigt. Mit dabei sind u.a. der britische Musiker James Blake (“I Need A Forest Fire ft. Bon Iver“), das Elektropop-Duo Hundreds aus Hamburg („What Remains“) und die allseits bekannte Metalband Korn („A different World“).

 

Bei der Veranstaltung „Was bleibt? Die Kritik digitalen Lebens in hyperdigitalen Musikvideos.“, kuratiert von Prof. Dr. Holger Lund bleiben wir am Freitag, 5. Mai 2017 (22 Uhr) beim Thema Musikvideos und widmen uns Auswirkungen der Digitalisierung, die alle Lebensbereiche betreffen.

 

Außerdem im Programm: Eine abstrakte Visualisierung von Gustav Mahlers 5. Sinfonie. Der Videokünstler und Experimentalfilmer Max Hattler hat gemeinsam mit  Studierenden der School of Creative Media (City University of Hong Kong) den Animationsfilm „Five“ geschaffen, der am Samstag, 6. Mai 2017 (23 Uhr) zu sehen ist.

Die abendlichen Jam Sessions im Café le Théâtre finden ebenfalls in Kooperation mit den jazzopen statt. Vom 4. bis zum 6. Mai 2017 (jeweils ab 22 Uhr) sorgen die Live-Acts für einen stimmungsvollen Ausklang des Festivaltages.
