Africa in the late 19th century: “This Magnificent Cake” is a story about five different characters at the time of colonialism: a king in trouble, a middled-aged pygmy working at a luxury hotel, a failed businessman on a jungle expedition, a vanished baggage porter, and a young deserter all hike through Belgian Congo. Each of the characters had his own way of failure – some of them failed at society, some at their own dreams.
