In Persona: Florence Miailhe (Paris)

Florence Miailhe unites visual arts and animation in a unique way. It was during her studies at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris with a focus on engraving that she discovered her love of animation. She was particularly fascinated with the possibility of using animation to bring paintings to life and tell stories with the movements. With her debut film “Hammam” from 1991, which sensually told the story of two young girls’ first visit to a hammam, Florence Miailhe developed her incomparable style of “painted film” in an extraordinary interaction between painting and animation: with small, step-by-step changes of the original image, the drawing is brought to life directly in front of the camera without losing its picturesque character. Florence Miailhe garnered international recognition with her films “A Summer Night Rendez-vous”, which was given the César Award in the category of Best Short Film in 2002, and “A Neighbourhood’s Tale”, which got an honourable mention at the Cannes Film Festival in 2006. With light colours and thick lines, Florence Miailhe forms opulent, human bodies and places their sensuality and nakedness in the centre of her films with impressive sensitivity. In part planned, in part intuitive without a script, she brings life to these figures with unique movements and has them communicate with each other using only their bodies as well as movement and touch. For this poetic and highly expressive style, Florence Miailhe was honoured in 2015 with the Cristal d’Honneur at the Animated Film Festival in Annecy for her life’s work.
