Jonathan Hodgson is an internationally renowned award winning animation director and independent animator based in London. He is also a senior lecturer and programme leader of BA Animation at Middlesex University. He studied animation at Liverpool Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art. Most of his work is in the area of 2D animation, but he also works with live action. His films are to be categorized somewhere between documentary and experimental animation and usually avoid conventional narrative, being largely based on observation and personal experience. His animated shorts have won many international awards, including a BAFTA for Best British Short Animation in 2000 for “The Man with the Beautiful Eyes” and 2019 for „Roughhouse”.Hodgson has directed numerous advertising campaigns, music videos and features including the groundbreaking “The Age of Stupid”, one of the first documentary features to be crowdfunded. He was the animation director of “Wonderland: The Trouble with Love and Sex”, the first full length animated documentary on British TV. He has been commissioned to make films for amongst others, the BBC, Channel 4, The Arts Council of England and Film London’s LAFVA scheme. Jonathan Hodgson has presented retrospectives of his work at Norwich Animation Festival, Hull Short Film Festival, Anima Mundi Animation Festival Brazil, Eksjo Animation Festival Sweden, Etiuda & Anima Film Festival Krakow and London International Animation Festival. In addition, he presented master classes in three Canadian cities for the National Film Board of Canada and at Haifa Film Festival in Israel. His work is featured in numerous books and DVD compilations.He continues to combine teaching with animation filmmaking through his own production company Hodgson Films. Among his recent projects are “Mostafaei” an animated documentary he directed for Amnesty International’s End the Death Penalty campaign, “Guantanamo Bay: The Hunger Strikes” for Guardian Films and a collaboration with Alain de Botton on a short film titled “What Comes After Religion for The School of Life”.
