In Persona: Ulu Braun (Berlin)

Since 1997, Ulu Braun has been using video as a medium to open up a field between visual art and narrative cinema. The visual artist and filmmaker plays a key role in transferring the art of painting to video art, and with his video collages established a new genre: He combines self-created footage and found footage to build new scenes. In keeping with surrealism, these collages bring together what does not belong together and thus construct a different reality of its own. He assembles film sequences and image motifs from various sources to create panoramic landscapes focusing on the fascination of fantastic, artificial paradises. His films were screened by various festivals including Berlinale, Sarajevo Film Festival, International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, IFF Rotterdam, Guanajuato IFF Mexico, Hong Kong IFF, Ann Arbor Film Festival, EMAF, 25 FPS Zagreb and Videoart at Midnight.Having studied at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and animation at the Film University Babelsberg in Potsdam, he moved on to the Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki on a DAAD scholarship and now lives in Berlin. Ulu Braun’s works have been shown by art institutions worldwide including KW Berlin, Hirshhorn Museum Washington D.C., Centre Pompidou Paris, Kunstmuseum Bonn, Shedhalle Zurich, MARTa Herford, Museo Reina Sofia Madrid, Berlinische Galerie, Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Mercosul Biennial (with Ykon), Athens Biennale (with Ykon), and Kunsthalle Wien. In addition to his video and film projects, Ulu Braun also works on collages, objects, spatial installations and performances, and is a member of the artist collective YKON and co-founder of the artistic duo BitteBitteJaJa (DA/AT).
