The Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film on tour!

Since 2006, the Festival of Animated Film (ITFS) has been going on tour with a selection of the best animated short films from the previous Festival and can be seen worldwide with the programmes “Best of International Competition”, “Best of Tricks for Kids” and, since 2020, the “Trickstar Nature Award”.

Diverse and creative, experimental, entertaining, and political is the selection of the best animated short films of ITFS 2022. Alongside themes such as sustainability in films like “Pig” or “Sprite Fright”, personal dramas (“To the Last Drop”, “Steakhouse”) and issues of violence and power (“The Immoral”, “BusLine35A”, “Tio”) play an important role this year.

The Grand Prix winner of ITFS22, “Bestia” by Hugo Covarrubias from Chile, is also an excellent example of how a complex historical portrait of a dark period – the military dictatorship of Chile from 1973 – 1990 – can be represented on film using a special stop-motion technique. However, not only does the programme impressively show dark sides of our present and past, but it also offers poetic, playful and abstract films that interpret fairy tales in a new feminist way (“Deep Water”) or create new visual worlds with the help of AI (“HYSTERISIS”).

The films highlight the topics of climate protection, biodiversity, the environment, and sustainability in visually powerful and sharp-witted animations and encourage critical contemplation in both humorous and serious ways. In the winning film “Pig”, director Jorn Leeuwerink reflects on the climate crisis with black humour and a tragic-comic tone. He succeeds in wrapping a threatening issue in playful-looking images and presenting it in the form of a seemingly harmless fable.

In “Mondo Domino”, filmmaker Suki, inspired by slapstick comedies and the cartoons of Tex Avery, reveals in unbridled rhythmic images and delirious colours all the madness of the human species, which over-exploits, over-consumes and lives in a world that goes to hell unchecked.
