In Persona Katrin Magnitz

It’s likely a certain “niche” modesty, which Katrin Magnitz shares with many of her contemporary German animated industry colleagues, that makes her work an insider tip. Living in Hamburg as her city of choice, she makes little fuss about her films. She would have good reason to do so, however, as she breathed life into the legendary Ottifanten by Otto Walkes, transformed children’s wishes into picture stories for Sesame Street, and brought Jutta Bauer’s delightful illustrations of the stubborn queen of colours into the world of animation. Another good reason is because films like “Die gar nicht ungewöhnliche Geschichte der Erbse D.” (The not at all unusual story of the pea D.) are unique not only because of their titles. With a remarkable caprice, Katrin Magnitz designs and tells contemporary history stories from a personal perspective, unconventionally portraying the many „Goethen“ or the life of a woman with an increasingly tranquil self-confidence – unusual, reflected, political. Starting in the 1970s, the perfect biotope for her experiments from pop-art style to rapid cross-fading techniques was the rebellious cinegrafik studio in Hamburg and the artistic movement that took place there with others including Robert Darrol and Ursula Asher-Winzentsen. With the latter, in the 1980s Katrin Magnitz put a remarkable point on the worlds of adults and children in films in which stories unfold with a slightly surreal touch, e.g. “Die Erfindung des Kabeljaus” (The invention of the codfish), standing for an era of courageous children’s television.
