In Persona: Wong Ping and Kongkee (Hong Kong)

In 2015, comic and animation artist KongKee (Kong Khong-Chang) was invited to create the comic book “Travel to Hong Kong with Blur” for British band Blur. In 2017, KongKee co-directed the animated short film “The Dragon’s Delusion” with two renowned Hong Kong animation directors, Lee Kwok Wai and Tsui Ka Hei, Haze. The film won the HK 2017 Regional Gold Award and a Gold Mention of DigiCon6 ASIA awarded by TBS Japan. KongKee has created a series of nostalgic animations. Only then did he come to realize that we are living in a world with where memories are lost every day. There is a place – the place KongKee grew up – where some called this a borrowed place on borrowed time. This raises the question of who is the lender and who is the borrower. As for people living in this place, which side do they belong to? A lender can’t collect what has been lost; a borrower can’t return what he has not possessed. KongKee’s work “Mirage” is made up of shorts set in this borrowed city, with characters looking for answers. Who is actually in possession of true memory?Wong Ping’s animations have been commissioned by M+, Nowness as well as Prada and he is the winner of one of Perspective’s 40 under 40 Awards. His recent shows include “Golden Shower” at Kunsthalle Basel/Switzerland, “Who’s the Daddy?” at Kunstraum Capri in Düsseldorf/Germany, “One Hand Clapping” at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and “Songs for Sabotage” at New Museum in New York. Works by Wong Ping are part of several permanent collections including M+ Hong Kong, Kadist Paris/San Francisco, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum New York, Fosun Art Foundation Shanghai. In 2018, he was the recipient of the inaugural Camden Arts Centre Emerging Arts Prize. In 2019, he was among the winners of the Ammodo Tiger Short Competition of the 48th International Film Festival Rotterdam.
