Representations between overdrawing and stereotyping in character animation
The lecture shows by means of examples throughout the history of animation, how one of the strengths of animation, namely the possibility to bring essential traits to the point by abstraction and exaggeration, can have both positive and negative effects, since the overdrawing is also based on stereotypes and derogatory clichés.
Dr. Erwin Feyersinger is an academic assistant at the Institute for Media Science at the University of Tübingen and co-director of the Center for Animation Research. He is co-speaker of the AG Animation of the Gesellschaft für Medienwissenschaft (GfM). Among others, he published the monograph Metalepsis in Animation: Paradoxical Transgressions of Ontological Levels and is co-editor of several anthologies on animation.
