Masterclass: Inclusion & Diversity on Screen
9. May, 10:00 - 11:00
In the pursuant of an inclusive/diverse TV landscape:
The challenges of creating an authentic inclusive utopia on screen.
Everyone is talking about how best to make content inclusive. But the journey of every idea from script to the screen is a long, costly and risky business. To get diversity right on the screen is only half the story. The other half is the part no one outside your organisation or broadcaster sees. In the pursuit of this utopia, how do you avoid the very dangerous pitfalls and the fallout on your reputation if you get it all wrong? There are issues or misrepresentation, prejudices, stereotypes, tropes and even cultural appropriation. This can often seem like a mine field fraught with career ending dangers.
There are also questions about our motivations, and the wrong motivation can often affect the end result. When is diversity tokenistic and how much of an investment does it take to pull off diversity and inclusion in an authentic way?
As a commercial entity how do you mitigate the risk against the gains and does it all really make sense for your brand?
And finally, we will examine how you hardwire diversity into the DNA of your creative and storytelling process. These are challenges that companies – big and small – are faced with on a daily basis. In this masterclass we will learn first-hand how to navigate these sometimes-dangerous waters and discover how best to evolve our brand into one that is truly inclusive and diverse.
