The LEAF Network (League of European Animation Festivals, Love of Animated Films or Leading Environmental Animation Festivals Network) is a network consisting of animation festivals spread throughout the European regions. The festivals forming the network are:
AG Kurzfilm
The German Short Film Association – with members including film festivals, film and art schools, short film distributors and sales companies, as well as film industry institutions – is the representational and lobbying body for German short film. Its ambition is to improve the public awareness of German short film both nationally and internationally. In this regard, the association functions as a service centre for makers and producers of shorts, as well as for various short film institutions, and as a contact source on German short film for political bodies, the film industry, cinemas and festivals.
AG Filmfestival
At a first meeting on 4 July in Kassel, more than 60 German film festivals got together to found a Film Festival Working Group (AG). The aim of the AG is to network among themselves, to create better conditions for film festivals in Germany and to strengthen and promote film culture together with filmmakers and other associations.
Animafest Zagreb
Animafest Zagreb is a place of inspiration, creativity, exchange of ideas, innovation, communication and international diversity. Z… is for Zagreb!
The World Festival of Animated Film – Animafest Zagreb, established in 1972, is the second oldest film festival in the world completely dedicated to animation. Launched thanks to the global reputation of the filmmakers sprung from the Zagreb School of Animation, founded based on the decision of ASIFA, International Animated Film Association, Zagreb Film production company and City of Zagreb, Animafest Zagreb takes place every year early in June.
Animest International Film Festival
The Animest International Animated Film Festival is the only festival in Romania dedicated exclusively to animated film. Founded in 2006, the festival brings hundreds of films from around the world to the big screen in six competition categories, retrospectives, programmes for famous animation schools, genre festivals and big names in the industry. Every October Bucharest hosts film directors, producers, students, curators and journalists for audience talks, premieres, workshops and master classes, concerts and new animation film projects.
Cartoon Media
CARTOON is an international, non-profit association based in Brussels. It organises Cartoon Forum; Cartoon Movie; Cartoon 360; and the Cartoon Masters training seminars.
Cartoon Forum is a pitching and co-production forum for animated TV projects. At the upcoming edition, producers will have the opportunity to pitch their project in front of 950 broadcasters, investors and other potential partners from 40 countries. Staying optimistic and focused, we hope to offer a safe on-site edition where all professionals will be delighted to see each other again!
Cartoon Movie is a co-production forum for feature-length animation, mainly for cinema, with around 900 participants.
Cartoon 360 is a pitching event dedicated to cross-media animation projects, while Cartoon Masters offers three training seminars for European industry professionals.
Fantoche
Fantoche is the most important animation film festival in Switzerland and one of the most distinguished events for animated film in the world. It takes place annually in September in Baden / Switzerland. The festival appeals to professionals as well as to a broad audience.
Each year Fantoche organises an international, a Swiss and a children’s film competition for animated short film productions. The annually changing themes in focus, which are developed in collaboration with curators, also offer space for new multimedia and interactive forms of animation. Fantoche cooperates with international festivals and cultural institutions and is involved in cultural education throughout the year. The 20th edition will take place from 6. – 11. September 2022.
Filmfest Dresden
Versatile, international, inspiring – that is the programme of the FILMFEST DRESDEN. Every year in April it brings the best short films from all over the world to Dresden on six festival days, attracting up to 20,000 visitors each year, including around 500 accredited trade visitors. The heart of the festival, the National and International Competition, honours current animated and short fiction films with prize money of over 67,000 euros. A diverse special and supporting programme completes the festival week.
Französische Filmtage Tübingen-Stuttgart
are the largest showcase of Francophone cinema in Europe and this year, for the 37th time, will present the latest feature-length and short films, exciting retrospectives, school cinema films, homages and Ciné concerts in Tübingen, Stuttgart, Reutlingen and Rottenburg. With over 16,000 visitors annually, the French Film Festival is a successful public festival that builds cultural bridges between Germany and the French-speaking countries beyond the medium of film with an attractive supporting programme and numerous guests from all over the world. For many years, the FFT has been highly regarded by the international film industry thanks to the awarding of attractive film prizes.
The festival has thus established itself above all as a springboard for young, as yet undiscovered francophone cinema. The International Competition and the French Competition enable the audience to see the latest productions promptly in a stimulating festival atmosphere and to discuss them with the guests.
Kaboom Animation Festival
Kaboom Animation Festival is the one-stop-shop for the latest and greatest in all things animated. Ranging from cutting-edge experimental arthouse to colorful stories for families and kids, Kaboom will cater to the animation needs of all. Enjoy the best that top animators from around the world have to offer with hundreds of short and full-length films in cinemas in Utrecht and Amsterdam and online. A week of top-notch offline and online animation that will blow your mind.

Linoleum Filmfestival
LINOLEUM International Contemporary Animation and Media Art Festival is the biggest showcase of short independent animation in Ukraine. Launched in 2014 in Kyiv each year the festival screens around 250 films from all over the world, offers workshops and lectures held by the field’s best players and a special program for children. LINOLEUM aims to support animation artists and promote Ukrainian animation worldwide as well as encourage and celebrate creativity among animators and media artists.
The festival is organised by Animagrad.
NaturVision Filmfestival
NaturVision is the film festival for nature, wildlife, environment and sustainability in Europe. It has been based in Ludwigsburg since 2011. Within just a few years, NaturVision has developed into a unique festival: In addition to the view of nature and its beauty, the focus is on environmental protection and resource-conserving action. Workshops, science slams, Schau in die Welt, open-air cinema and a future market complete the film programme – both offline and online.
O!PLA Festival
O!PLA Festival (existing from 2013) is the largest animation film festival in Poland, with almost 22.000 Jury members (only viewers), almost 140 festival venues located between the Baltic Sea and the Tatra Mountains, presenting more than 100. shorts each year, divided into 9 categories – these numbers briefly outline the specifics of the most unique and completely grassroots biggest Polish celebration of animated film. O!PLA was the first film festival in Poland reorganized themselves during quarantine, and start to be on-line. The quarantine gave O!PLA a lot of inspiration. Thanks to an online existence, the festival could reach more people, not only from Poland. People could watch and vote online. We inaugurated with the new cycle „O!PLA LIVE, but from home… , where I meet with the directors/animators/screenwriters/musicians and talk about the process of creation. This is one of the most important positive effects of the pandemic, paradoxically.
Stuttgarter Filmwinter
35th Stuttgarter Film Winter – Festival for Expanded Media
For over 30 years, the festival has been dedicated to the border crossings of cinema, media and net art with an experimental international programme of films, workshops, the Expanded Media exhibition and performances. The core of the festival are the international competitions for short film, media in space and network culture flanked by an extensive programme spanning all generations.
The festival is both a meeting place for experts and professionals as well as a festival for the audience. The festival’s aim is to bring innovative and challenging forms of cultural expression and complex artistic and technological issues closer to a wider public in a playful way.

Tricky Women/Tricky Realities is the world’s first and only festival of animated film dedicated specifically to animation by women*.
From gender equality to digitalization, from human rights to the working world to social, economic and ecological questions – for twenty years, Tricky Women/Tricky Realities has been exploring social and political issues from a feminist and artistic perspective and offering new ways of highlighting social inequalities.
Taking place around International Women’s Day, it has become a staple on the festival calendar for many as both a safe space and a place of exchange and networking.
We support women* filmmakers and artists and offer a platform of presentation, inter/national exchange and knowhow transfer.
