With this tribute programme we bid farewell to Gil Alkabetz, a great animation artist and loyal friend to the ITFS. The programme honors his life’s work and combines his own award-winning animated films as well as two of his previously unreleased works with films he created in workshops together with students at the Filmuniversität Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF and a film by his students in his honor.
Gil Alkabetz was an internationally renowned, multiple award-winning and revered animation artist and teacher. From 2004 until his death in 2022, he taught at what is now Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF.
Every new film was his last film and with every last film he wanted to reinvent himself. His work is characterised by a wilful absence of style and by artistic freedom, and yet each film is unmistakeable. Always interested in natural science and philosophy, he pondered a deeper understanding of the universe as a whole until the end.
