Merz Akademie: A Film? A Game? A Visual Novel?

Merz Akademie: Ein Film? Ein Spiel? Eine Visual Novel?

A film can feel like a game. Some games are more cinematic than many films. A novel can be interactive. A website can become something you watch.
These are just a few examples showing how the boundaries between different media are blurring — and how our expectations of video games are changing.

Merz Akademie is a state-recognized, non-profit university for design, art, and media in Stuttgart. It offers an interdisciplinary profile at the intersection of art, design, humanities, technology, and social transformation. Students can combine the study areas Emerging Media, Film and Video, New Media, and Visual Communication, or choose to focus on one specialization.

The projects presented here were developed within the New Media study area under the direction of Prof. Olia Lialina. This study area focuses primarily on web/UI/UX design as well as 3D/VR/AR design.
