Observation for animators, especially for quadrupeds

During the production of Flow, the animators had to focus on observing the animals present in the movie. Sacrebleu, the French production company, allowed them to spend a full day of observation in a Zoo in the South of France. The animation team was able to take notes, observe a capybara and lemurs, and understand their locomotion in more detail.

Then the combination of the various research carried out by each animator on the internet, made it possible to enrich a database of references. The various experiences of the more experienced animators with the work on animals also allowed them to specify and guide the younger and less comfortable ones. Animator Thibaut Delahaye and producer Ron Dyens talk about the journey from a joint visit to the zoo to the Oscar-winning animated feature film.
