“Just like the movies” – the making of a graphic novel

WED, 25.04., Metropol 3, 10 am

For many years, illustrator Tim Dinter and author Thomas Pletzinger have worked together on their graphic novel BLÅVAND, which will be awarded with the Comic Book Award of Berthold Leibinger Stiftung in Stuttgart on April 23. The cooperative work stages and processes for such a book are not unlike the making of a film. Dinter and Pletzinger present their book and give an account of research, script, storyboard,  location scouting, set design, editing and colour correction – for their book.

Short presentation in German, discussion in German and English

Loving Vincent: How to animate 65.000 oil paintings into an Oscar-nominated feature

THU, 26.04., Metropol 3, 10 am

The first fully oil-painted feature film in film history originated from an idea for a short film. Ten years and 65,000 paintings later, the Polish-British co-production has won the European Film Award and been nominated for a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and an Oscar. The homage to Vincent van Gogh was directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman, and created in painstaking handiwork with the help of 125 artists. Producer Sean Bobbitt describes the journey from idea to prize-winning film.

From actual event to animation screenplay – “The Journey of the Elephant Soliman”

SAT, 28.04., Metropol 3, 10 am

When Soliman the elephant crossed the Alps in 1550, he had already travelled around the world. Born in Sri Lanka, shipped to Portugal, he was a gift for the Austrian Emperor. Soliman died in Vienna just a year after his arrival. People were touched by his story told in books, exhibitions and stage plays. And in a feature film? This is where our journey begins:  How to fictionalize an adventurous life for an animated film, and how Soliman’s character was created.

“Manou The Swift” – From Idea to Screenplay

SUN, 29.04., Metropol 3, 10 am

Axel Melzener has worked on numerous scripts for film and TV in the past, but “Manou, der Mauersegler” was the first screenplay for an animated film he worked on as an author. The unfamiliar medium posed new challenges and sparked many a light-bulb moment. Based on his experiences with the project, in this workshop he talks about the differences between live-action and animated film with regard to story concept and scene composition, of how to take advantage of the strengths of the animation format, and about how to avoid potential pitfalls.

BEHIND THE SCENES OF THE „ISLE OF DOGS“ PRODUCTION

WED, 25.04. Cinema, 4 pm

Angela Poschet will give you a look behind the scenes of the stop-motion animation film “Isle of Dogs“ by Wes Anderson, from her perspective as Production Supervisor.

In this position she has been involved in the “Isle of Dogs“ production from a very early stage: she was one of the first people to read the script in February 2015. Angela Poschet was in charge of running the production, by getting everything done on time and within budget.

“Isle of Dogs“ was the opening movie of and had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival, and is quite unique: This was the first time ever that a puppet animation opened a “regular “ live-action – film festival and won the “Silver Bear for Best Director”!

Animated Film in the Bundesfilmarchiv (Federal Film Archive): Film and Discussion with Doris Hackbarth

WED, 25.04. Metropol 3, 5 pm

Each animated film needs a home with its name on the door. The German Federal Archive – Film Archive retains innumerable treasures from German animated film history. They would be useless and unable to be found without indexing. The woman who has probably seen and indexed the most animated films in the Federal Archive and the previous State Film Archive in the GDR during her 40 years of service is Doris Hackbarth. Together with Manfred Lichtenstein, she published the inventory “Deutsche Trickfilme (1909-1945)” (German Animated Film (1909-1945)) and throughout the years has set up an information archive on the topic of German animated film – invaluable sources for research and festivals. They are even more important because West German animated film in the 1950s and 1960s was made up of a confusing archipelago of difficult-to-find pearls by very small producers: Highly entertaining advertising films from “German Disneys”, surprising animated film attempts for new political circumstances, and initial, superb ventures by German and East European author-filmmakers toward animated film art. With a great sense of gratitude for her incredibly important and passionate work, we talk with Doris Hackbarth about her long-time experience in the archive and present some of her personal archive highlights. Panel AG Animationsfilm (Association of Animated Film): Committed to diversity? Talking about animation on German television

WED, 25.04., Games-Pavillon, 1 pm

Every broadcaster in Germany, regardless whether public or private, must adhere to legal guidelines for the promotion of information and diversity; and diversity applies to animation, too. Animation is one of the crowd pullers on television – attracting not only children and youths – and can offer a wide range of formats and genres. But producers in Germany complain about a lack of orders and timeslots as well as tight budgets. How does that tally?

So what is the true status of animation on television? Do broadcasters meet their viewers’ needs, and do they follow the guidelines?

Representatives of media policy discuss the broadcasters’ mandate and the possibilities of animation. Another issue for discussion is the impact on the industry.

The discussion group marks a new study by AG Animationsfilm (Association of Animated Film ) on the situation of animation on television due to be published in time for ITFS 2018.

#fairspeech – Because Hate is not an Opinion

WED, 25.04., BMZ, 10 am – 4pm

Workshop on the Topic Hate Speech on the Internet

The one-day workshop #fairspeech offers an intensive look at the topic of hate speech using the example of sexism in video games.

In the first learning module “Understanding”, you will gain insights into the structure and creation of hate comments and the reasons and consequences for those affected.

In the second module “Reacting”, we look at concrete ways to react to hate speech both online and from a legal perspective.

The workshop is meant for people interested in disseminating this in their teaching and for members of regional higher education institutions – both students and employees.

The #fairspeech workshop is a cooperation project between the Festival of Animated Film Stuttgart (ITFS) with the Internationaler Bund (IB), which has assisted the Festival as its exclusive partner in the area of social and educational work for many years.

With almost 14,000 employees, the Internationaler Bund (IB) is one of the largest service providers in the area of youth, social and educational work in Germany. Its motto is “Strengthening Being Human”.

The workshop is free for registered participants

Cartoon Network meets Hochschule Luzern

SAT, 28.04., Gloria 2, 5 pm

The Cooperation

Idents are an ideal challenge for animation students: A precise task, a manageable length and a defined deadline provide clear conditions for the students to give free rein to their fantasies. Cartoon Network and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences – Art and Design have cooperated for eight years and the participants are as enthusiastic now as they were in the beginning. The newly created idents are a part of the programme, as are the award-winning BA and MA Film theses and current series highlights from Cartoon Network.

Lucerne University of Applied Sciences – Art and Design

In a programme unique in Switzerland, the Bachelor of Arts in Film/Animation offers an theoretical and practical education in all essential areas of animated film. The students are free in their choice of technology and medium which allows them to create their own visual language in addition to learning the necessary professional, technical and manual skills of the trade. The Master of Arts in Design/Animation builds on this and optimizes future chances on the job market. For the implementation of the Master’s project, the goal is for students to join in a co-production project with external production companies.

ESMA (France)

FRI, 27.04., Metropol 3, 3 pm

The ESMA CG School offers a professional animation training in Montpellier, Toulouse, Nantes and Lyon. Recognized as “one of the two premier schools” for animation by Shelley Page (Dreamworks) ESMA is well-known all over the world. To enable the participation at CG courses for everyone ESMA has launched an English version of its training on the campus in Lyon. Every year the students‘ placement rate at ESMA is pretty impressive: 90% only 6 months after graduation.

The rich curriculum ensures professional success and includes the different steps of the production of an animated short film: the pre-production (model design, storyboard, layout, scenario…), the production (modelling, rigging, animation…) and finally the post-production (lighting, rendering and special effects). This curriculum leads to many work perspectives: 3D animator, character designer, 3D generalist, 3D designer, artistic director, or director as well.

CINEMATIC EXPERIMENTATION 1 & 2

Cinematic Experimentation is a subject at the Film Academy Baden-Wuerttemberg that is open to all students during their basic studies – as a requirement in the first year and as an elective in the second. Experimenting is not only allowed here, it’s expressly encouraged. Without the typical guidelines and limits of the market, the cinematic experimentation course conveys the approaches and methods of contemporary media. The students develop short films in unusual and unique narratives while taking into consideration many formal – often underrepresented – approaches. They apply both animation-technical real scenes and experimental types of games in mixed forms. Under these conditions, every year a series of filmatic jewels are created which impress the audience by virtue of their individual expressive forms.

MOTION DESIGN

The postgraduate program in Motion Design qualifies designers for management positions in agencies and studios as well as with production, broadcasting and other creative companies. The design of motion graphics, interactive and game design, screen promotion, trailer producing, and digital and spatial staging of festivals or cultural and music events is a key element of audio-visual media productions.

At the Film Academy Baden-Wuerttemberg, in addition to realising their own freely-designed productions, motion designers have the possibility to work closely with authors, directors, producers, animators, set designers, sound designers and composers – from the planning phase to the final product. Each year, the Film Academy awards diplomas to MEDIA and MOTION DESIGNERS who then successfully make their way in professional careers.

AniTrailer / AniPlay

In the winter semester of the third year of studying at the Film Academy Baden-Wuerttemberg’s Animation Institute, in cooperation with the Stuttgart Media University (HdM) and the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design (ABK), students developed a cross-media concept (Intellectual Property) which gave rise to short films and an interactive experience.  As third-year projects, these technologically innovative and stylistically very different animated short films and games had only four months of production time.

Studio presentations

Cartoon Saloon (Dublin)

WED, 25.04., Metropol 2, 2 pm

The presentation of the Studio of Cartoon Saloon will be presented by Jeremy Purcell. A long time employee of the company, he has worked with the studio on and off since 1999. Starting out as Head of Special Effects for the feature film in development, “The Secret of Kells”, he has held many roles in the studio to date. He is currently a Creative Director of the studio and the Cartoon Saloon Supervising Director of the TV Series “Pete the Cat”. His long time collaboration with the studio makes him an ideal candidate to lead the story from the humble beginnings through to one of Ireland‘s most successful animation studios.

The presentation will look at the early days of Cartoon Saloon, working on three different Oscar nominated features, as well as the creativity and collaborations of the TV Series “Puffin Rock”, the current growth in the studio and the making of Kilkenny as a centre of animation excellence in Ireland.

Vilnius Academy of Arts (Lithuania)

WED, 25.04., Metropol 3, 3 pm

The Animation programme in the Photography and Media Arts Department of Vilnius Academy of Arts is to educate artists to be able to make deep insights into methods of animation expression and use them in various artistic strategies. It is the only university type bachelor programme in Lithuania that helps integrate a wide spectre of animation art forms, techniques and technologies into artistic creation.

The programme is oriented towards art culture, when changes for animated film language are sought by considering innovative technologies and contemporary art tendencies.

Students gain knowledge of the history and theory of art, understanding of contemporary media and animation art context, learn to define the field of their creative interests, formulate artistic goals and reasonably choose the mediums to implement the ideas. Animation artists have the options of creating in traditional areas, as well as experimenting in interdisciplinary space or contemporary art culture.

Animation Institute

If you want to make your own animated film, create breath-taking visual effects or develop an interactive experience, you’re in good hands at the Animation Institute. The Institute offers students who specialise in Animation and Interactive Media subject-specific training and individual content supervision with state-of-the-art software and hardware technology. The two-year basic study period is the same for students of all subjects in the area of Film + Media. After the basic study period, the Institute’s students can concentrate on their third-year and diploma projects during the 2.5-year project period. Interdisciplinary team work is a primary focus of these projects.

The Animation Institute views itself as an educational institution oriented on the practice. That is why the curriculum is part of a constantly expanding network of internationally renowned guest instructors, partners from the private sector, leading national and international film academies, and speakers from the FMX, International Conference on Animation, Effects, Games and Immersive Media, all of which offer students important networking and career opportunities.

The Animation Institute’s alumni are in high demand – even their diploma projects have had great success at large festivals. After completing their degree, graduates have been hired by renowned studios in Germany and abroad or have founded their own companies.
