Animated Film in the Bundesfilmarchiv (Federal Film Archive): Film and Discussion with Doris Hackbarth

Each animated film needs a home with its name on the door. The German Federal Archive – Film Archive retains innumerable treasures from German animated film history. They would be useless and unable to be found without indexing. The woman who has probably seen and indexed the most animated films in the Federal Archive and the previous State Film Archive in the GDR during her 40 years of service is Doris Hackbarth. Together with Manfred Lichtenstein, she published the inventory “Deutsche Trickfilme (1909-1945)” (German Animated Film (1909-1945)) and throughout the years has set up an information archive on the topic of German animated film – invaluable sources for research and festivals. They are even more important because West German animated film in the 1950s and 1960s was made up of a confusing archipelago of difficult-to-find pearls by very small producers: Highly entertaining advertising films from “German Disneys”, surprising animated film attempts for new political circumstances, and initial, superb ventures by German and East European author-filmmakers toward animated film art. With a great sense of gratitude for her incredibly important and passionate work, we talk with Doris Hackbarth about her long-time experience in the archive and present some of her personal archive highlights.
