Focus Croatia: Best of Croatian Animation

The Zagreb School of Animated Film has put Croatian animation on the world map, with many filmmakers and their works taking part in festivals worldwide, and by having earned Croatian cinema its only Academy Award. Contemporary the works by Croatian animation filmmakers are characterized by a distinctive creative approach, both in visual expression and in the selection of themes. Pluralism is a term that best summarizes the current state of the scene. Filmmakers use a wide array of animation techniques, and their characters inhabit digitally created worlds as well as such produced by more classic animation techniques. Their stories rarely follow the logic of cause and effect, while the themes they explore tackle the status of man (and artist) in contemporary society, the (in)ability to communicate, as well as issues of human intimacy. All of this makes animation one of the most lively and productive segments of Croatian cinema. The diversity of styles and ideas in Croatian animation is largely owed to the work of animation students, many of whom have meanwhile evolved into artists with a recognisable style. Creative, rhythmic, playful, and smart, such are the works of these young talented artists, who have – consciously or not – inherited the best of the tradition of Croatian animated film.
