In Persona: Eva Natus-Šalamoun (Halle) & Volker Schlecht (Berlin)

Eva Natus-Šalamoun (1936-2014) left behind many enchanting traces in books and animated films for children. Her daughter Barbara remarks: “She was a very warm person and she put that into her art. Her illustrations are tender and yet also strong because she had a very subtle sense of colour.” Born in Halle, Eva Natus-Šalamoun was a bridge-builder. Czech and East German publishers printed her illustrations, and after her studies at the Academy of Arts UMPRUM and FAMU in Prague, she produced wonderful films in 1964 at the DEFA and later with Jiří Šalamoun and Václav Mergl. Her protagonists were quirky but full of character – sometimes drawn, sometimes cutouts.As a professor, starting in 1991 she built important bridges for the young generation at the Burg Giebichenstein in Halle. Volker Schlecht was among those for whom she opened up the world of animation. In Prague’s animated film studio Bratři v triku, he produced his student film debut and, like his mentor, successfully moved between illustration and animation, e.g. as the illustrator of Drushba Pankow for ZEIT, arte and graphic novels. His films look at political topics as well as pop culture with an aesthetically highly intriguing design between sketches and uncompromising clarity. In 1994, his first festival experience was at the ITFS, and in 2016 the Festival awarded him the Grand Prix for “Kaputt”.André Eckardt
