In Persona: Chad VanGaalen (Calgary)

Chad VanGaalen is an internationally respected musician, visual artist and celebrated animator whose music has brought accolades from across the globe and his videos and short films have been shown in over 40 festivals worldwide. Utilizing a wide range of techniques including traditional hand-drawn animation, painstaking stop-motion miniature work and digital tablet-drawn illustration, he has established an immediately distinctive visual style. In 2000 Chad VanGaalen graduated from the Alberta College of Art & Design and immediately started an active arts practice. Self-recording and playing almost every instrument – including many hand-crafted ones – Chad VanGaalen has established himself as one of Canada’s most diverse and unpredictable artists. The 2005 release of a video for his song “Clinically Dead” brought him international attention as an animator. Over the following year Chad VanGaalen produced videos for several artists as well as for himself. The 2006 video “Flower Gardens” became a phenomenon on YouTube, generating over 700,000 views and linkage from blogs worldwide. The first video for his Polaris short-listed album 2011’s “Diaper Island” was “Peace on the Rise”, which is by far the most narrative and accomplished of his work. Videos for Head & The Heart, Timber Timbre, Strand of Oaks, Black Mountain, Metz, Shabazz Palaces and his own celebrated albums have established him as a highly sought-after animator with a unique vision and vivid imagination. Recently Chad VanGaalen put the finishing touches on his sci-fi animated short film “Tarboz: Translated Log of Inhabitants”. In addition to painstakingly animating the film, he scored the soundtrack and voiced all the characters. The ITFS presents a comprehensive overview of Chad VanGaalen’s works: In addition to his In Persona programme, “Tarboz” can be viewed in the digital exhibition entitled “Science Fiction and Underground” presented at Galerie b of Stadtbibliothek Stuttgart.
