Lithuanian Animation Year in the World. Volume 1. Best Lithuanian films for children (4 years and older)

The association ASIFA Lietuva in cooperation with the International Animation Film Festival Tindirindis and the Lithuanian Animation Guild of Animators has prepared a retrospective film programme by Lithuanian directors, “Lithuanian Animation Year in the World”. This programme is dedicated to marking this year’s 100th anniversary of the restoration of Lithuania’s independence as well as the 110th anniversary of the birth of Lithuanian animation, which will be celebrated in 2020. Animation occupies a comparatively small place in the cultural life of Lithuania. However, it stands out with its unusual form of stylistic expression and the sensitive subject matter. The place of contemporary animation in the cultural market is changing rapidly, as fewer animation films are being made, while animation itself is becoming more a component of other kinds of visual art. In the first part of the programme, classical animated films for children are shown – full of optimism, joyous and comical situations. The program of the second part features films for adults created by directors, whose works marked the striking stages of Lithuanian animation. It combines the works of the older generation of directors and of young filmmakers who discovered bright and distinctive graphic design. The range of the films is widespread, starting with family drama, the topic of human affairs, disaster and political issues, ending with films that focus on the areas of the nation’s cultural heritage and tales.
