Mind the Gap! – framed : unframed
26. April , 19:00 - 21:00
Being damned to immortality can become a prison. Some animated figures cannot break the cycle and others find a loophole to freedom in the space between the images. A cosmos of possibilities opens itself.Lights! Action! Animation happens between shots. In the projection’s stroboscopic synchronous shots, a fragile, fictitious reality is put together in which life is expressed through movement. For some, inanimate objects are brought to life, for others animation is an artistic technique to manipulate moving pictures. However objectively it is viewed, the fascination remains as animation holds up a mirror to our mortality. The cartoon figure is flat after the steamroller is finished with him, but he shakes himself and is ready for the next gag. Once they have been animated, screws have the potential to continually turn all on their own. We are well aware that this represents a gap between two different realities, but still our perception and interpretation shifts back and forth between the two poles. This fantasy world gives us enticing chills and a desire to learn more as we look beyond death and our own reality. Animated reality is broken and refreshingly porous. There is no law saying that image 1 leads to image 2. The animation machine can stutter, glide, turn in a circle, or provoke quick associations. From each gap between the images, new connections can be drawn and shocking twists can occur. Each space can be filled with worlds of ideas – with theories or with real but invisible phenomena. Animation means evaluating the world, it is a philosophical viewpoint that contradicts all of reality with its own DNA while proving how diverse this reality can be.André Eckardt,Curator Mind the Gap!
